The first time I heard this quote was when Wolf Blitzer used this phrase in October 2020 with Nancy Pelosi when discussing the stimulus package being debated in Congress:

The second time I heard Voltaire’s quote was from John Mackey on the Joe Rogan Experiment podcast in November of 2020. Interestingly, he used the quote in a somewhat different way than Wolf Blitzer did.

Mackey wasn’t using it in regard to government bailouts. He spoke instead of capitalism versus socialism.

For those unfamiliar, John Mackey is the founder of the Whole Foods grocery chain. He is a capitalist, no doubt. He has his biases. But he also argues for what he calls compassionate capitalism — to easily and properly differentiate from the more commonly known crony version of capitalism.
