“Money is the root of all evil,” they say. So that’s the end of it right? Money = Evil?

Well, not exactly.

Not only is it not that simple, but the “quote” above is one of the most misquoted of all time.

Money isn’t the root of all evil. The actual quote comes from the Bible (1 Timothy 6:10):

…the love of money is the root of all evil.

(For those who aren’t Christian or fans of Bible quotes, don’t worry! The extent of my God talk ends soon I promise!)

I’m not looking to talk about Bible quotes as much as I want to get to the heart of it, is money good or evil?

Before we get too far in to it, we should say what money is exactly and why we use it.

What is Money?

The term “money” is typically used interchangeably with “currency” but they’re technically separate things.

Examples of money include gold and silver. Something that has value for its use/purpose (jewellery, use in electronics) as well as scarcity (it can’t just be duplicated but must be found/acquired).

Examples of currency include the dollar, yen, or euro. The value of currency comes in the power from the institution creating it. We…
