My wife is now two-thirds the way through her pregnancy so by the end of October my first child will arrive in this world.

There are a few topics in life that are just a bit too deep or difficult to really talk about and it requires someone living through it to really understand or appreciate it. Some easy examples that come to mind include:

  • How to handle your first love breaking up with you
  • How to handle the death of a loved one
  • How to determine who you should marry
  • What it takes to make a marriage successful
  • How to handle the stresses of parenthood

Parenthood is a great example where you don’t really know what you don’t know until it happens. Sure, you could ask and try to learn if you really wanted to hear advice. But you can’t really understand what’s going on until it happens.

And, yeah, I’m not even technically a full-fledged parent yet. But just seeing the ultrasound and getting the baby’s room ready and the baby shower coming up soon, reality is starting to set in.

There’s not a whole lot that most people can say, and there’s not much that most people even want to hear, until the day comes and your life is changed forever.

The top 3 things I am sweating over now, that no one could have warned me about even if they wanted are:

  1. What kind of parent will I be?
  2. Will he even like me?
  3. Worrying about death

What kind of parent will you be?

One of the biggest questions that you can’t really answer until you actually start being a parent is what kind of parent you’ll be. And it’s not just about me, but my wife as well, of course. We’ll both be raising our son and have to learn the best techniques to ensure he is set up for the most success possible in life.
